Club Paradise Housereef

Shore-entry. Depth 3-17 m. This meandering reef features different species of tunicates, sponges, sea stars and sea cucumbers. An aggregation of giant clams ( Tridacna spp., mostly endangered) is located at 12 m. Several species of damselfish, wrasse, groupers, fairly basslets, emperors, parrotfish, snappers, butterflyfish, flying gurnard and cardinafish are among the inhabitants of the reef. Those that burrow in sand include sand perches, lizardfishes, flatfishes , stingrays and certain wrasses. During the day, a large aggregation of jackfish can be found in the inner reef slope. Fusiliers, barracudas, and tunas roam large areas around the island while a number of reef-associated fishes venture to the open sea. Ghost pipefish, Pegasus horse, nudibranchs, slugs and various small invertebrates make this site good for macro-photography. During months of December to April, cuttlefishes can be closely observed in the reef.

Next to the reef is an extensive seagrass bed. Occurring in large aggregations, goatfishes scour the bed for food embedded in sand. Green turtles ( Erythmochelys imbricata ) and the dugong ( Dugong dugon ), both endangered, are among the grazers in this area. (The dugong is a mammal which can measure up to 3 m long and weigh about 400 kg. Dimakya is one of the few areas in the world where dugongs can be observed underwater.)
